Santa Monica USA's Second Most Expensive Destination, Cheap Hotels Survey Shows
SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Summer vacationers who are headed to California are in for some sticker shock at the hotel desk if they decide to stay in Santa Monica. Hotel rates in this beachfront city are making it the second most expensive destination in the United States this summer, according to a recent survey compiled by CheapHotels.org.
In coming up with the list, all U.S. destinations were compared for the period spanning June through August 2012. The cities were then ranked based on the cost of their cheapest available double room. The prices cited, therefore, reflect the minimum price guests will pay to stay overnight at each location. Only hotels rated two stars or higher went into the tabulation.
It will cost Santa Monica visitors an average of $287 nightly to stay in the cheapest available double room there. With only Rhode Islands' Newport topping that figure at $319 per night, Santa Monica earns the distinction of being the nation's second most expensive place to spend the night.
Three more California destinations made a showing in the Top 10: Napa Valley's Calistoga ranks third most expensive at $285. Avalon, on Santa Catalina Island, comes in at the number seven slot at $210 and the trendy seaside resort of Laguna Beach ranks ninth at an average of $200.
The following table shows the 10 most expensive destinations in the USA. The prices shown are based on the average rate for their cheapest available double room (minimum 2-star hotel) for the time period spanning June through August 2012.
