Santa Clara County REALTORS® Foundation Raises $5,000 for Elementary School

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Santa Clara County REALTORS® Foundation has raised $5,000 at a recent pumpkin auction for Katherine R. Smith Elementary School in East San Jose.

The money will help purchase school supplies for KR Smith. This is the second year the Foundation – the charitable arm of the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS® – held a pumpkin auction to benefit the school. Each year members of the association responded enthusiastically and gave thousands of dollars within hours.

Katherine R. Smith is honored as a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School for its achievements, but the school and its students face tough challenges. Sixty-five percent of the students are from "socioeconomic disadvantaged" families, meaning their household income falls below the poverty line and their parents did not finish high school. Fifty-three percent of the students are English learners. The majority of the students are either Hispanic (64 percent) or Asian (23 percent).

"REALTORS® are deeply committed to our community, and when education funds are being cut in California, we feel obligated to pitch in and help give our local children an opportunity to achieve, regardless of the socioeconomic status of their family," said Mike Sibilia, President of the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS®. "We welcome members of the public to attend the pumpkin auction and join our efforts."

The pumpkin auction was held October 26.
