Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS(R) Supports Protecting Local Water Supply

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS® supports efforts to replenish the groundwater basin and ensure safe drinking water by supporting the groundwater production fee the Santa Clara Valley Water District proposes.

For the year 2010 – 2011, the water district has not raised the fee for a third year in a row. The agency is conducting a public review process to set the charge. The fee applies to well owners and businesses or residents with a water producing facility on their land.

"The real estate community understands the critical value to protect the quality and supply of our drinking water," said Karl Lee, President of the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS. "Water issues have an immediate impact on the local economy and property values. It's in the best interests of all stakeholders and county residents to support programs that recharge our groundwater and make sure our water is safe. We applaud the Santa Clara Valley Water District for not raising the groundwater production fee – it demonstrates fiscal prudence during these tough economic times."

With the fee, the water district is able to operate and maintain local reservoirs and purchase imported water. The agency is also able to monitor and protect groundwater from pollutants, ensure proper construction and destruction of wells, plan and construct improvements to infrastructure, and sustain the groundwater aquifer.
