WASHINGTON, Oct. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- David Sandberg, a vice president and corporate actuary for Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America, will begin his term as president of the American Academy of Actuaries on Oct. 28. Sandberg accepted the association's presidential gavel earlier today during a transition ceremony at the Academy's annual meeting and awards luncheon in Las Vegas. He will succeed Mary Frances Miller, a consulting actuary with Select Actuarial Services in Nashville, Tenn., as president for the 2011-2012 term.

Sandberg has served in various leadership capacities for the Academy, including a term as vice president of its Life Practice Council from 2005 to 2007 and as a regular director on its board of directors from 2002 to 2005. He has also held leadership positions at the international level, including serving as the vice chairperson of the International Actuarial Association's Insurance Regulation Committee from 2003 to 2006.
He was elected by the Academy's board of directors to the office of president-elect in October 2010. As president-elect, he served on the Academy's board of directors and Executive Committee.
Sandberg joined Allianz Life's predecessor LifeUSA in 1989 and soon after became corporate actuary. His responsibilities have included GAAP & statutory reporting, crediting rate and investment strategies, experience analysis, government relations, and reinsurance.
