San Jose Construction Workers Turn to Voters to Deliver Local Jobs and Family Sustainable Wages
Greyhound Residential project approval was the straw that broke the camel's back
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The recent City approval of the 23-story Greyhound project in downtown San Jose without any requirement for the developer to hire local construction workers or to pay them a family sustainable wage is unacceptable. So, today, Responsible Development San Jose, the South Bay Labor Council, Working Partnerships USA, and the Santa Clara and San Benito Counties Building and Construction Trades Council will release results from a poll showing overwhelming voter support for a ballot measure that would require San Jose residential and commercial development projects hire local workers and pay them a family sustainable wage.
See the Interested Parties Poll Results Memo from the pollster here.
"We trust the voters to enact this groundbreaking requirement that will reward local workers and our local economy over greedy developers and land speculators who reap enormous profits while shortchanging workers and not providing a community benefit to San Jose," said Bill Guthrie, UA Local 393 Business Manager.
The poll of 911 likely November 2018 voters shows overwhelming support for the following question:
Shall an ordinance be adopted requiring that large-and medium-sized residential or commercial projects that receive a subsidy or other incentive pay market-rate wages and hire local workers?
