San Francisco Deltas and San Jose Earthquakes Clash in U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round
SAN FRANCISCO, June 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Francisco Deltas and the San Jose Earthquakes, the Bay Area's two professional soccer teams, will meet in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round on Wednesday, June 14 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose.
"I think the upcoming game between our team and the Quakes is significant because it's exciting for Bay Area fans to have an opportunity to see soccer played at the highest level between two local teams," said SF Deltas head coach Marc Dos Santos. "The fans see San Francisco against San Jose as a rivalry and we understand that."
Fans from both sides have begun to call Wednesday's contest the "101 Derby" because Highway 101 connects the two cities. A derby is a common term in soccer that refers to a game between two teams from the same town, city or region.
The U.S. Open Cup is a knockout competition in American soccer; the Cup is the third-longest-running open soccer tournament in the world and is the country's oldest annual team competition. The Cup is open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and consists of eight rounds between May 10 and September 20.
"There's a lot of pride that comes from clubs playing in the U.S. Open Cup. As an American, it's fun to have an interleague competition where anything can happen," said SF Deltas forward Tommy Heinemann. "To play against a team that has a lot of tradition and history will be special for our club."
This will be the second matchup between the two Bay Area rivals. The Deltas previously won against the Quakes 1-0 in a preseason friendly on February 15. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. at Avaya Stadium. Tickets are available at www.sjearthquakes.com/tickets.
