SAN DIEGO, July 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- San Diego area dentist, Dr. Weston Spencer joined the hosts of CBS's The Doctors on May 18, 2017 to discuss how eating and drinking habits affect oral health. For their segment "Which is Worse," Spencer compared food and drink selections to help viewers understand how their consumption habits impact dental health.
ER physician, Dr. Travis Stork, and plastic surgeon and reconstructive surgery expert, Dr. Andrew Ordon, sat down with Dr. Spencer to share the lasting effects of food and beverages on the surfaces of the teeth and mouth.
Dr. Spencer presented healthy and unhealthy options alike. Surprising the audience and doctor hosts alike, even the healthy options can have damaging effects on the teeth.
Cariogenic options included sticky foods and acidic drinks that wear away at the protective enamel of the teeth.
Dr. Weston Spencer informed viewers of best practice following consumption of such substances. He advised to ingest water immediately after consumption to clear these substances from the surfaces of the teeth, reducing the growth of plaque against the surface of the teeth and along the gums. Because it induces salivation, chewing gum with xylitol was also recommended. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol commonly recommended by dentists because unlike sugar, it does not convert to acid and cause further tooth decay.
Dr. Spencer advised viewers to delay brushing teeth until one hour after consumption of acidic foods and drinks, so as not to further damage the enamel of the teeth.
