"Luminaria is San Antonio's signature art event because it showcases local artists in a way that involves the entire San Antonio community as well as regional, national and even international audiences," said San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro. "On this fifth anniversary, we are committed to helping provide an extraordinary experience that highlights the creative culture of our city."
Luminaria began in 2008, modeled after similar arts events in Paris, Madrid, and Toronto. Artworks – highlighting the six artistic disciplines of music, dance, media arts (film), literary arts, theatre and visual arts – focus on light as a central theme. The event, by attracting national and international attention, has helped raise San Antonio's profile as a premier arts destination in the country and the world.
"San Antonio has a vibrant arts community that is known for highlighting the city's historical and cultural legacy. Through events like Luminaria, local artists get the opportunity to display their works with national and international artists. Luminaria showcases the immense talent that exists in San Antonio," said City Manager Sheryl Sculley.
The event, originally slated for March 10, 2012, was postponed due to inclement weather. With the exception of a select number of artists who are unable to participate due to previously scheduled commitments, the majority of the original selected artists are all confirmed.
"Excitement for the upcoming 5th Annual Luminaria is growing," says Richard Rosen, Artistic Director of Luminaria. "As we prepare for Luminaria, our city leaders and our selected artists are looking forward to showcasing the artistic talent from our community, to the rest of the country and beyond."
For the first time, attendees will be able to experience Luminaria like never before with Luminaria Live, developed by title sponsor, Rackspace Hosting. Luminaria Live is an interactive guide to be used with mobile devices that has information on the event, the artists and more.
