San Antonio Chamber Establishes Lecture Series in Honor of Ed Whitacre
SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --- The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce presented their highest award to Ed Whitacre, Chairman of the Board for GM and Chairman Emeritus for AT&T Inc. October 13th at their annual event held at San Antonio's AT&T Center. The GM Foundation also took the opportunity to announce a new lecture series in Whitacre's honor.
"This is the highest award given by the 115-year old organization and is reserved for those who forge new trails in innovative ways that impact not only their companies, but transform their community," said 2010 Chamber Chairman Carri Baker Wells. "This is the kind of leader Ed Whitacre has always been."
The event featured a video honoring Whitacre with Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance, AT&T President, Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson and John T. Montford, his close friend and GM's Senior Advisor, Government Relations and Global Public Policy.
"I'm very pleased to be called a pathfinder," Whitacre said in his introduction. "However, I know that great cities are built, shaped and improved by many people. They are the collective vision of many pathfinders. I am proud to share this award today with all of the people who do so much to make San Antonio the best it can be."
"Ed Whitacre is an American icon. He is competitive, visionary, a people person and committed to community service," Montford said. "That's why Ed is a pathfinder and a testimony to the American dream."
This is the third Pathfinder given by The Chamber. Previous winners are Texas' Governor Rick Perry and former Governor Dolph Briscoe.
As head of the GM Foundation, Montford also announced that GM would honor Whitacre by working with The Chamber to start a leadership lecture series. The "Ed Whitacre Lecture Series," will be a forum that brings together business leaders and college students to learn from nationally recognized business executives.
"We want to inspire entrepreneurship and build the leadership that will help San Antonio achieve greatness in the 21st century," Montford said.
