Samsung Medical Center Acquires Asia's First Leksell Gamma Knife Icon System
Elekta's new stereotactic radiosurgery system enables Korean hospital to treat wider range of brain disorders with ultrahigh precision
SEOUL, South Korea, June 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
Elekta has signed a contract with one of Korea's most advanced hospitals, Samsung Medical Center (SMC) in Seoul, to deliver the first Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™ to Asia.
In order to contribute to improving the nation's health through the best medical service, SMC has chosen the most precise cranial radiosurgery device on the market. Some of Icon's key features include:
- The option of frameless treatments with similar level of accuracy as with frame-based treatments
- An integrated image guidance system based on stereotactic Cone Beam CT (CBCT)
- Online Adaptive DoseControl™, a concept for continuous quality control that involves both high-definition motion management and technology to verify that the dose ends up in the right place.
Combined, these allow for virtually unlimited clinical and operational flexibility. Even more types of indications can be treated with the same high precision and efficiency that has earned Leksell Gamma Knife® its reputation.
"With Leksell Gamma Knife Icon, I can increase treatment efficiency while minimizing toxicity to normal brain tissues," says Dr. Jung-Il Lee, professor at SMC's department of neurosurgery. "Icon brings new possibilities to patients with tumors that could not be operated on before."
Professor Lee has treated more than 7,000 patients with Leksell Gamma Knife since 2002 and will now pioneer the new potential that Icon brings.
"Outside China, SMC is one of the busiest Gamma Knife radiosurgery centers in Asia," says Per Nylund, Elekta's Business Marketing Director for Neuroscience in Asia. "Furthermore, SMC is an active research center and frequently publishes scientific articles within the field of radiosurgery. We are delighted that Professor Lee and SMC are the first in the region to choose Leksell Gamma Knife Icon to enhance their operational efficiency."
Leksell Gamma Knife Icon is CE marked. Icon is not approved in all markets and is not for sale or distribution in the US. Icon was introduced for the first time in Asia at the 12th International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society Congress in Yokohama, Japan, June 7-11, 2015.
