UBM TechInsights' circuit analysis confirmed Samsung's use of a unique, modified 6F2 architecture to achieve a variation in the process technology of their latest DRAM. Though wordline half-pitch measurement would traditionally indicate that the process node of this DRAM be 46nm, a closer look at the half-pitch of the shallow trench isolation (STI) resulted in a smaller cell size, revealing a significant reduction in the STI and a new milestone in DRAM process technology.
In the 10th edition of the Insight Awards, the Most Innovative Memory Product category featured numerous submissions, making the selection of five finalists for the Memory category a challenging task for the judging panel. Selecting Samsung acknowledges the Korean semiconductor manufacturer for designing a product that would resonate in the highly competitive memory market.
"Regardless of how changes in memory design are redefining the term 'process node', we can agree that this is a milestone in DRAM process technology for Samsung," said Jason Abt, Director of Technical Intelligence. "The engineering challenges that were overcome to make such a significant reduction in STI are a convincing sign that Samsung is well ahead of its competitors in the DRAM market, and points to very strong positioning for advanced semiconductor manufacturing overall."
UBM TechInsights has done extensive research and analysis on Samsung's 30nm DDR3 DRAM; including examination of the device at the package and die level with analyses of the process technology, memory cell configuration and materials identification.
Since its introduction over a decade ago, the Insight Awards remain as the first industry-recognized program to celebrate engineering design and innovation at the semiconductor level. Winners are chosen independently from a judging panel consisting of senior analysts and engineers to ensure that devices submitted for consideration are evaluated on the merits of their design and technical achievements.
