Sam Francis: The '70s – A New Exhibition at Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art
Important Paintings from the 1970s now on view February 15 - April 12, 2019
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art gallery celebrates the genius of Sam Francis in the new exhibit, Sam Francis: The '70s from February 15, 2019, through April 12, 2019. This carefully curated exhibition of paintings by the internationally renowned artist Sam Francis features important paintings from the 1970s. The exhibit opens in coordination with the highly-anticipated launch of the book Sam Francis: The Artist's Materials by Debra Burchett-Lere and Aneta Zebala of the Sam Francis Foundation, published by Getty Publications.
American artist Sam Francis (1923-1994) is internationally recognized for his unique visual language; one of intensity and exuberant use of color, light, and negative space. According to author and critic Richard Speer, "This mastery of the spaces between is in abundant evidence in Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art's exhibition of important Francis works from the 1970s. Time after time, the paintings displayed in this exhilarating exhibit point to Francis reenergizing his commitment to negative space and making these lyrical voids, and the profundities they encompassed, accessible to lay viewers and connoisseurs alike." Important works in this period such as Green (Untitled) (SFP71-34) reveal the impact of interior spaces in a new way along with SFP79-15 with its exciting bands of color woven into powerful grids.
Sam Francis: The Artist's Materials by Debra Burchett-Lere and Aneta Zebala explores Francis's idiosyncratic painting practices that have long been the subject of speculation and debate among conservators and art historians alike. Presented for the first time in this new book are the results of an in-depth scientific study of more than forty paintings, which reveal new information about his creative process and unveils the complicated evolution of the artist's work.
Building on Sam Francis's creative legacy, the Sam Francis Foundation (http://samfrancisfoundation.org) is dedicated to the transformative power of art as a force for change. Its mission is to further a greater understanding of Sam Francis's art and ideas through a broad array of programs and activities designed to educate, inform, and catalyze new thinking about the importance of creativity in society.
Debra Burchett-Lere is the executive director of the Sam Francis Foundation and has organized numerous exhibitions and publications on the artist including Sam Francis: Catalogue Raisonné of Canvas and Panel Paintings, 1946–1994. Aneta Zebala, conservator and author, is founder of Zebala & Partners.
