Salinas City Elementary School District Dedicates Chevron Project Expected to Save Nearly $9 Million
SALINAS, Calif., March 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In partnership with Chevron Energy Solutions, the Salinas City Elementary School District will dedicate a solar energy and efficiency project that is expected to save the district almost $9 million in energy costs over its life, over $1.5 million in just its first five years of operation.
Through the use of solar installations, lighting retrofits and energy efficiency improvements, the project is expected to reduce electricity costs at the district's 14 sites by 80 to 90 percent. In addition, students in the Salinas Valley will benefit from opportunities to learn about energy conservation, sustainability and clean technology.
"We approached this project very aggressively and we chose Chevron as our partner," said Jerry Stratton, Salinas City Elementary School District Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. "I demanded that all construction occur outside the school day and over summer break; educational minutes are sacred and we would not allow any disruption of classroom activities. Chevron rose to this challenge, ordering and pre-positioning materials and equipment so they could literally mobilize and begin construction the afternoon that school recessed for the summer…No classroom was disrupted – even for one minute."
"We are proud to work with the leaders of the Salinas City Elementary School District, who've shown forward-looking vision in meeting both the energy and educational needs of their community," said John Mahoney, Senior Vice President of Chevron Energy Solutions.
A ribbon-cutting event to dedicate the energy and sustainability program will take place on Friday, March 21, 2014, 3:45 pm, at the Boronda Meadows Elementary School, 915 Larkin Drive, Salinas.
