Salford Royal Announces New EPR Provider
SALFORD, England, Aug. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Salford Royal has announced Allscripts as the provider of its new Electronic Patient Record (EPR) System.
The Trust has used its current EPR system, iSoft Clinical Manager (iCM) for 10 years, allowing the organisation to have a patient-centric electronic record including prescriptions, test results and patient assessment notes.
Approximately one million patient records are held on the secure system, which has 7,000 users including 160 GPs across 55 surgeries in Salford. In moving to the new system the Trust will migrate approximately 14 million clinical letters and around 100 million diagnostic results.
Having derived maximum benefit from their current system, Salford Royal started the procurement process for a new system last year. The organisation's Trust Board has now given the go ahead for the implementation of Allscripts' Sunrise Clinical Manager (SCM).
Taking advantage of features offered by SCM will enable the Trust to increase the reliability and consistency of care and promote evidence based practice supporting an improved patient experience and outcome. The resulting enhanced safety and efficiency all contribute to the Trust's strategic objectives around safety and quality.
Salford Royal Consultant Physician Dr Bob Young said: "The new system will create a better and safer experience for patients who can be confident their health records are being held in one central, secure location, which can be accessed by health professionals involved in all stages of the patient's care.
"Departments which have previously been reliant on paper will be able to use the system. For example, adding Accident and Emergency (A&E) means clinicians in this department will electronically log and track decisions on patient care, manage bed capacity and waiting times.
"The new system will also be compatible for both hospital and community staff, for example, health visitors and district nursing teams, which is crucial to Salford Royal in its new role as both a provider of acute and community services."
Salford Royal's Executive Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive Tony Whitfield said: "Salford Royal continuously strives to be at the forefront of health informatics and prides itself on being a leader of the information revolution to transform the quality of healthcare it delivers.
"Our current EPR system has served us extremely well for the last 10 years but system development is moving forward at an ever faster pace and an EPR system must move with the times to meet the needs of a patient and their clinician.
"By investing in the new system we are securing an EPR to serve us many years into the future. Excitingly, SCM has the potential to include a patient portal, meaning at some point in the future Salford Royal could be one of the first Trusts to enable patients to log on and view their own health records."
Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts, said: "Allscripts is committed to helping Salford Royal provide better quality and more efficient healthcare. The Sunrise system is built on an open platform that offers access for both the hospital and community caregivers, creating a Connected Community of Health. The information available to providers will support their decision making process as well as support the analytics that Salford Royal can use to enhance care."
Allscripts will shortly commence the implementation process for the new system. Clinicians will be able to use the new EPR system in September 2013 after completing a programme of training.
