SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Saint Francis Foundation and Tenderloin Health Improvement Partnership (Tenderloin HIP) today announced $400,000 in grants to fund community programs and increased security for newly renovated Boeddeker Park in the heart of San Francisco's Tenderloin.
The Saint Francis Foundation and Tenderloin HIP made a $250,000 grant to the nonprofit Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco to lead the new collaborative partnership at Boeddeker Park and to develop community programs that will be hosted at the park's playground and inside a new activity center.
An additional $150,000 grant was made to Tenderloin Safe Passage, a community organization based in the park that helps ensure safe passage along designated routes for the more than 3,500 children who live in the 40-block neighborhood.
The Saint Francis Foundation and Tenderloin HIP are the largest funders of ongoing programming and safety for Boeddeker Park.
"The re-opening of Boeddeker Park is a game-changer for the Tenderloin and is a result of the outstanding efforts of The Trust For Public Land, San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, Friends of Boeddeker Park and many others," said Kevin Causey, President of the Saint Francis Foundation and head of Tenderloin HIP.
"The hard work now begins to ensure the park is safe and activated," Causey said. "If the park remains a sanctuary where all members of the community can meet, play and feel safe, positive change will radiate throughout the neighborhood. The grants from Tenderloin HIP will enable Boeddeker Park to engage the entire community and help redefine the neighborhood."
The two grants are part of a $1 million funding commitment for high-impact projects in the Tenderloin announced in November by the Saint Francis Foundation and its founding funding partners, Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, Wells Fargo, Citi Community Development, PG&E, the San Francisco Foundation, Georgette M. Beainy Trust, Dignity Health and Twitter.
Causey said that the collaboration and alignment of all stakeholders committed to the success of Boeddeker Park, both public and private, is an example of Tenderloin HIP's focus on "collective impact," an urban planning model that addresses complex social problems.
