SAIC to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions 25 Percent By 2020
Company Reinforces Commitment to Sustainable Business Practices and Corporate Responsibility Initiatives, Utilizing In-House Engineers to Meet Aggressive Goals
MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) today announced that it has set a goal to reduce operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 25 percent (from 2010 levels) by 2020, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable business practices and other corporate responsibility initiatives that enhance its ability to deliver efficient solutions to customers.
Since 2005, SAIC has tracked GHG emissions and actively implemented changes to reduce impact on the environment within its facilities and through enhanced business practices. These changes have provided a positive return on investment, a platform for the demonstration of the company's energy and environmental solutions, and improved alignment with customers.
"As we have done in the past, we will leverage the broad expertise of our employees and high performance culture to meet sustainability objectives, improving the effectiveness of every dollar spent and better serving our customers," said SAIC Chief Executive Officer Walt Havenstein.
SAIC will utilize in-house engineers who specialize in tackling energy challenges to help meet the new goal, and to identify and implement additional cost-effective energy efficiency projects across the enterprise. The company is also developing employee education programs to help improve environmental and energy awareness.
The company also continually works to optimize the use of its existing real estate portfolio to support its agile workforce, and is implementing means to provide internal computing applications through a cloud environment, allowing for improved data center management and energy reductions. The company's landfill-free headquarters campus in McLean, Va., and support for ridesharing and accessibility to alternative transportation, which earned SAIC the designation of Best Workplace for Commuters(SM) from the National Center for Transit Research, also serve as examples that SAIC sees corporate responsibility as a critical facet of business success.
"Competitive advantage belongs to companies that integrate sustainability principles into their thinking, their culture, their operations and the solutions and products that they provide to customers," Havenstein said. "Stewardship of our natural resources is one reflection of SAIC's commitment to corporate responsibility, ethics, and integrity. We will continue to take actions and make investments that improve our business performance and sustainability."
