MCLEAN, Va., March 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corporation (NYSE: SAIC) announced today that it will be the presenting sponsor of the 2014 Washington Nationals Patriotic Series, a four-game series that celebrates the American Spirit and pays tribute to those who risk their lives and continue to make personal sacrifices to protect this country. Nationals' players will also honor these heroes by wearing their patriotic uniforms featuring the stars and stripes Curly "W."
The 2014 Patriotic Series includes the following games:
- Armed Forces Day - Saturday, May 17 vs. New York Mets at 4:05 p.m.
- Memorial Day - Monday, May 26 vs. Miami Marlins at 1:35 p.m.
- Independence Day - Friday, July 4 vs. Chicago Cubs at 11:05 a.m.
- Heroes Day - Wednesday, Sept. 10 vs. Atlanta Braves at 4:05 p.m.
"As the presenting sponsor of the Washington Nationals Patriotic Series, SAIC is proud to work with a great organization like the Washington Nationals to create an opportunity to recognize our nation's members of the military and first responders who put their lives on the line every day to protect our freedom," said SAIC CEO Tony Moraco. "This is the first year SAIC has had the privilege to sponsor this series as an independent, publicly traded company following our support last year of the Patriotic Series as part of our former parent company, and we are excited to continue our support for an event that honors our nation's heroes and their families."
As presenting sponsor, SAIC underwrites hundreds of Nationals tickets, which are donated to the organizations' members including, but not limited to active duty military personnel, reservists, retirees, veterans, wounded warriors, and their families. Also, SAIC sponsors the flag giveaway that takes place before each Patriotic Series game. Fans are encouraged to wave their flags during the Nationals In-Game Military Salute at the bottom of the third inning.
For each game of the series, SAIC and the Nationals partner with non-profit organizations, such as USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore (USO-Metro), The Mission Continues, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), Operation Homefront, and Pentagon Memorial Fund, and honor their members in pre-game tributes. For Armed Forces Day, SAIC is partnering with USO-Metro and The Mission Continues to distribute the donated tickets to active duty military, veterans, and their families. On Memorial Day and in honor of TAPS 20th Anniversary, the Nationals will welcome hundreds of family members and survivors of fallen heroes as honored guests.
In celebration of Independence Day, Operation Homefront, a national organization that provides emergency assistance to military families, will be honored at the game and SAIC employees will salute the holiday with a large flag unfurling during the National Anthem. Heroes Day recognizes the Pentagon Memorial Fund and pays tribute to first responders and all those who lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and honors those who safeguard our homeland.
Me and a Friend Program
Throughout the season, SAIC will also co-sponsor a hospitality area for every Sunday home game in support of the Nationals' "Me and a Friend" program, which benefits the USO-Metro. As part of the program, the Nationals and USO-Metro distribute more than 1,200 tickets to these games to the children of active duty military families. These children, who face special social challenges created by their parents' frequent reassignments, are given tickets and the opportunity to bring a friend to the games. Once at the game, they will have special access to the SAIC-hosted hospitality area, which offers food and beverages as well as co-branded T-shirts for all participating in the program. Participants also get priority for the post-game "Kids Run the Bases" activities.
"As military members deploy in and out of the country and across the nation, their families must often endure the hardships associated with multiple moves, such as getting used to a new community and schools," said USO-Metro CEO and President Elaine Rogers. "Each move means military children have to re-adjust to their new environment and begin the process of making friends all over again. Thanks to the support of SAIC and the Nationals, this transition process is made easier for our young patriots and their parents, and we're extremely grateful to them for their unwavering support."
