SAIC Named One of the 2010 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses
Company Recognized by the National Veteran-Owned Business Association (NaVOBA) for Outstanding Work with Veteran and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Businesses
MCLEAN, Va., April 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) today announced that it has been named one of the 2010 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses (VOB) by Vetrepreneur magazine, which is published by the National Veteran-Owned Business Association (NaVOBA). This marks the company's fifth time in six years receiving the honor.
NaVOBA unites current and future veteran-owned businesses by acting as the national voice for the veteran business community. There are currently three million veteran-owned businesses in the United States, according to the association, which works to encourage corporate America and the government to consider using veteran-owned businesses as preferred vendors.
SAIC continually strives to foster relationships with small businesses, including those that are veteran-owned. The company also mentors and provides training to these firms, helping them grow and fostering deeper relationships that result in enhanced customer offerings. Over the last two years, SAIC has also provided training in business and proposal development, pricing, and program management to more than 150 veteran-owned businesses at no cost to them. In Government Fiscal Year 2009, SAIC subcontracted over $335 million to VOBs and exceeded the statutory 3% goals for service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses for the third consecutive year. These programs are the culmination of a series of initiatives implemented by SAIC, aimed at developing strong relationships with small businesses and increasing business opportunities for them.
"At SAIC, we believe veteran-owned businesses bring the needed capabilities and technical know-how to enable SAIC to better serve our customers," said Jim Cuff, SAIC senior vice president and head of business development. "Teaming with these companies, and combining our collective experience is key to innovation – this enables us to bring forward the solutions necessary for our customers to accomplish their critical missions, and gives us the ability to mutually build our businesses."
SAIC has also been recognized for outstanding work by the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Department of Defense (DoD) and other Federal agencies. The company has earned 12 DoD Nunn-Perry Awards for mentor-protege performance, two SBA Dwight D. Eisenhower Awards, as well as two SBA Frances B. Perkins Awards, demonstrating SAIC's commitment to small business excellence.
