SAIC Awards $125,000 Grant to University of Alabama in Huntsville Business School
Company Continues to Support the Development of Academic Programs in Enterprise Resource Planning
MCLEAN, Va., May 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) today announced it has awarded a $125,000 grant to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) business school to help further develop programs in enterprise resource planning (ERP) using SAP software.
SAP software, which helps manage business solutions, is currently used in 12 UAHuntsville business school courses, including a course in business intelligence management. More than 1,500 students have taken these classes since 2006.
"One of the critical elements needed for taking full advantage of the opportunities presented by the BRAC (base realignment and closure) realignment is going to be growing the pool of people who are skilled in ERP," said Jeet Gupta, Ph.D., UAHuntsville management professor. "The grant from SAIC will allow us to grow our ERP teaching programs using the same SAP software used by the U.S. Army, NASA, their contractors and many other businesses in the community."
This year's grant builds on SAIC's $96,000 donation to the school in 2009, which also supported the development of ERP programs, student skills through SAIC internship programs, guest speakers and assistance with curriculum development.
"Continuing to incorporate SAP/ERP into our business classes means that this resource will be included in the education and lives of hundreds of additional students every year," said Dr. Caron St. John, dean of the UAHuntsville College of Business Administration. "The feedback received from industry and government reveals that these classes give our students a unique advantage, and benefit the organizations that employ them."
UAHuntsville is part of SAIC's Strategic University Alliances program which focuses on campus activities in support of the company's strategic goals, particularly strengthening the science and technology core of SAIC.
"The pursuit of joint research and educational initiatives is critical in meeting future challenges in business and technology," said C. Daniel Harris, SAIC senior vice president. "We look forward to continuing our work with the students and faculty at UAHuntsville to develop the ERP skills required to support key customers like NASA."
With more than 2,000 employees, Huntsville is SAIC's third largest location. The company has more than 2,500 employees throughout the state of Alabama.
