Saguna and Akamai Showcase the World's First Content Delivery Network Operating from the Mobile Base Station
YOKNEAM, Israel, September 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Saguna Networks, an innovative provider of RAN-based acceleration and monetization solutions for LTE Networks, announced today a joint demonstration with Akamai at 4G World/CTIA 2014, showcasing the first Content Delivery Network (CDN) that operates from within the Mobile Base Station. This new class of CDNs leverages real-time radio congestion monitoring and proximity to mobile users to deliver superior user experience, new monetization opportunities and improved network economics.
Getting content as close as possible to the mobile user is crucial to reducing round-trip-time (RTT) and making accurate performance tuning decisions, in order to improve the mobile Internet user experience. Radio network edge placement, in concert with the CDN serving the content, is especially beneficial when trying to optimize HTTPS content, since this type of content cannot be cached or optimized inside the mobile network using standard "transparent" caching methods or optimization techniques.
Now, for the first time, Saguna CODS Open-RAN featuring CDN-Extend enables content providers to operate a Virtualized Server Side Module deep inside the mobile network at the 4G Base-Station - as close as possible to mobile users. By optimizing content delivery closer to mobile users, the innovative software based platform reduces latency and increases delivery speed while preserving mobility and complete core network functionality including billing and policy enforcement.
In the demonstration, Akamai's Content Delivery Network (CDN) is integrated as a server-side application running on the Saguna CODS Open-RAN platform, which operates inside the mobile base station. Using Saguna CODS CDN-Extend, Akamai's CDN can cache content for delivery as close as possible to mobile users at the mobile network edge.
"Mobile users are seeking the same high quality rich media experiences they get on their wired devices. Yet mobile networks simply weren't designed to make that user demand a reality," explained Lior Netzer, vice president, Emerging Mobile Products, Akamai. "Our showcase with Saguna heralds a new and inventive class of content delivery solutions for mobile networks. Saguna CODS Open-RAN enables Akamai's CDN to operate within the mobile base station in close proximity to mobile users and leverage real-time radio congestion conditions."
"We are very proud about working with Akamai to demonstrate the first CDN operating from the Mobile 4G Radio Access Network using Saguna CODS Open-RAN" said Lior Fite, CEO of Saguna. "Saguna CODS Open-RAN was created as an open platform that brings 3rd party content delivery solutions media portals into the Mobile Base Station. Our showcase with Akamai highlights the business value and opportunity presented by Saguna's innovative Open-RAN platform."
The Saguna and Akamai demonstration featuring the Saguna CODS Open-RAN CDN- Extend will be presented in the Saguna booth 3342 at 4G World/CTIA 2014. Visitors will be able to see a live demonstration of streaming content from the Radio Access Network yielding an outstanding user experience.
