LOS ANGELES and ROCKVILLE, Md., Dec. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- SAGE and Expert System (EXSY.MI) today announced the release of SAGE Recommends, a new discovery capability within the SAGE Knowledge platform that provides users with links to related SAGE content to support academic research. Powered by Luxid® software, the feature uses SAGE's new proprietary social science taxonomy to reveal connections between content and concepts across disciplines.
First appearing on the recently enhanced SAGE Knowledge platform, SAGE Recommends suggests further reading within the context of a book chapter, reference entry, or streaming video – referring readers to related journals, datasets, and other reference material hosted on other SAGE platforms. The feature brings together the knowledge mined from SAGE's 1.5 million journal articles, more than 250,000 book chapters and reference works, and much more. SAGE Recommends enables a serendipitous research experience across all of SAGE's award-winning content platforms, leading students and faculty to uncover relationships between topics across the social science disciplines.
"SAGE Recommends is the first of its kind to offer a truly cutting-edge research tool for social scientists," commented Martha Sedgwick, Executive Director of Product Management at SAGE. "The multidisciplinary thesaurus under the hood of SAGE Recommends presents contextualized links across social science fields at the point of need, offering the right research recommendations at the right time across all of SAGE's platforms."
As users browse book chapters, read reference entries, or watch videos, the SAGE Recommends tab appears on the right side of the browser. Clicking on this tab allows users to explore a scrolling list of suggested journal articles, datasets, reports, case studies and multimedia that is related to the content they are viewing, based on semantically related terms and concepts from the SAGE taxonomy. SAGE Recommends provides links to related content across most of SAGE's online scholarly resources: SAGE Knowledge, SAGE Journals, SAGE Research Methods, SAGE Stats, U.S. Political Stats, SAGE Business Researcher, and CQ Researcher.
"Social science faces similar difficulties as other areas of Higher Education where tackling big data to efficiently find, share and capitalize on knowledge remains a challenge," said Daniel Mayer, CEO, Expert System Enterprise. "We are extremely proud to be the taxonomy and semantics engine under the hood of SAGE Recommends, an essential capability that advances serendipity and findability in this market."
Based on patented natural language processing technology, Luxid® answers to the challenge of structuring, managing and exploiting unstructured content. It is a powerful and scalable solution that recognizes and extracts relevant items of information hidden in plain text. Stored as metadata, these items intimately reveal the nature of informational assets and help boost the efficiency and scalability of all processes involving the management, distribution, access and analysis of large amounts of textual content. Luxid® includes an integrated workflow for creating and managing taxonomies and ontologies, applying them to content, and converting them into powerful content recommendation engines.
Hosted and maintained in the Luxid® platform, the 63,000-term SAGE social science taxonomy underlying SAGE Recommends is based on 50-years' worth of leading social science journals, books, and reference works. The taxonomy brings together the knowledge mined from SAGE's award-winning reference works and dozens of existing controlled vocabularies across the social sciences.
The development of SAGE Recommends was informed by robust research of faculty, students, and information professionals to help SAGE determine how to best support unplanned instances of discovery. Full research results will be published in a SAGE white paper in January, 2016. Additionally, SAGE Recommends will roll out to other products during the next year – including SAGE Research Methods, SAGE Business Researcher, CQ Researcher,SAGE Stats, and US Political Stats.
SAGE and Expert System will host a live webinar on January 28 at 8:00 am PT/11:00 am ET/5:00 pm CET to discuss how users can best apply the new semantic capability of SAGE Recommends to better support research.
