Safeway Stores in Four States and the District of Columbia Recall Deli-Prepared Fried Chicken Due to Undeclared Milk Allergen

LANHAM, Md., June 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway stores in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. are recalling deli-prepared fried chicken. Safeway was informed by Newlyweds Foods that the blended bread coating that it provided Safeway to make fried chicken included milk, which was not disclosed as an ingredient.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. This recall impacts deli fried chicken pieces prepared in and sold from all sections of the deli area, including the full-service deli counter, the self-serve hot case, and the self-serve refrigerated case. The fried chicken is packaged in a white deli bag or clear plastic clamshell container with a white scale label.

The type of fried chicken (hot or cold) and the Sell Thru Date are printed on the scale label. Recalled fried chicken packages with the word "Hot" in the product name display Sell Thru Dates up to and including Jun. 7. 17 (June 7, 2017). Recalled fried chicken packages with the word "Cold" in the product name have Sell Thru Dates up to and including Jun. 10. 17 (June 10, 2017).

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Fried chicken made with the recalled bread coating has been removed from sale. Deli-prepared fried chicken currently sold in stores does not use the recalled bread coating and, therefore, is not subject to the recall.
