Safariland and VIEVU to Debut Industry's First Holster and Body Worn Camera Activation System at IACP Global Police Chief Summit on October 15 - 18, 2016 in San Diego, California
Body Worn Camera Auto-activation System automatically activates VIEVU body worn camera
Miami-Dade first police department to conduct testing and evaluation
ONTARIO, Calif., Oct. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Safariland Group, a leading global provider of safety and survivability products designed for the public safety, military, professional and outdoor markets and the parent company of VIEVU®, and VIEVU, a leader in body worn video, today announced they will debut the Safariland® 7TS™ series duty holster with Camera Auto-activation System (CAS) at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference on October 15 – 18 in San Diego, California at Booth #1039. Safariland's CAS™ technology, the first of its kind, automatically activates the VIEVU LE4 Body Worn Camera when a firearm is drawn from the holster. The camera captures the 30 seconds leading up to the drawing of the firearm, and continues recording until it is manually turned off.
The Safariland Group also announced today that the Miami-Dade Police Department is the first police department to conduct testing and evaluation of the Camera Auto-activation System. Initial testing began last week at the department's firearms testing range with Safariland/VIEVU experts on site. The evaluation process is expected to last approximately one month.
"After equipping the Miami-Dade Police Department with more than 1,000 body worn cameras, we are pleased to further our partnership with the department through the testing and evaluation of our proprietary Camera Auto-activation System," said Scott O'Brien, president of Safariland. "CAS technology provides a best-in-class solution that promotes enhanced transparency, enables faster resolution of officer-involved incidents, improves evidence management and enhances data analytics, and we look forward to the conclusion of the evaluation process."
Miami-Dade Police Department Captain Gustavo Duarte, who was present during the first day of initial testing, said, "Officers who tested the system appreciated that the CAS technology will enable them to focus on critical situations in the field without having to think about when and how to initiate the body worn camera. Importantly, we are confident that reliably eliminating this decision-making process will help our officers keep our communities safer."
The Safariland 7TS holster models with the Camera Auto-activation System feature a wired connection to ensure consistent auto-activation of the VIEVU LE4 Body Worn Camera upon the drawing of a firearm. The wired connection allows for simple and reliable operation, minimizing user error, and can be fitted to an existing LE4 Body Worn Camera. The first 7TS models to feature the Camera Auto-activation technology are the 7360 ALS®/SLS Mid-Ride Level III Retention™, 7365 low-ride, and 7280 SLS Level II Retention™ duty holsters.
The VIEVU LE4 Body Worn Camera, while in standby mode, is continuously buffering 30 second periods of footage. Once the activation system is initiated, the camera retains the most recent 30 seconds of footage prior to the initiation and continues to record until the officer turns off the camera. Importantly, the LE4 Body Worn Camera can record for 12 continuous hours without having the battery recharged and enables livestream videos and the addition of metadata for analytical practices. The VIEVU LE4 Body Worn Camera can also be manually activated at any time with a single swipe over the lens. In contrast, existing technologies up until now have required multiple "taps" or "swipes", often resulting in failures to activate recording capabilities during critical moments.
The IACP conference will host thousands of dedicated professionals from federal, state, county, local and tribal agencies that share intelligence on the latest technologies and practices. Product demonstrations of this new auto-activation technology are on display throughout the conference. Agency Test and Evaluation opportunities will also be available.
