SAE International to Hold Diesel Engine Technology Academy in Turin, Italy

WARRENDALE, Pa., Sept 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Diesel engine terminology, functions and emissions controls are just some of the principles and technologies that will be on display at the SAE International Diesel Engine Technology Engineering Academy, Oct. 22-26 at the Politecnico Campus at Lingotto in Turin, Italy.

The types of engines that will be addressed include naturally aspirated, turbocharged, pre-chamber, open chamber, light duty, and heavy duty. The academy is an intensive learning experience comprised of lecture and structured practical sessions, including a team-solved case study problem. Evening sessions are included.

Attendees of the academy will be able to:

Articulate basic diesel engine terminology and principles
Describe the key features of the basic types of diesel engines
Compare various diesel fuel injection systems and their components
Analyze the effects of different fuels on engine performance and longevity
Compare the function and applicability of various air management systems
List the various emission standards and testing requirements
Detail the elements of post-combustion emission control devices
Discuss emerging diesel engine technologies

Registrants will receive a copy of the textbook, "Diesel Emissions and Their Control," by lead instructor Magdi K. Khair and W. Addy Majewski.

In addition, academy participants will participate in a technical tour of the GM Powertrain Europe Research Center and Politecnico Labs. This GM research facility is the first time an automotive company has located its labs inside a university campus, demonstrating GM's long-term commitment to Torino and the collaboration with Politecnico as one of the key elements of this commitment.
