Ruggles Introduces Red Velvet Cake Limited Edition Premium Ice Cream
ORRVILLE, Ohio, May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Dairy Enterprises Inc. announces the debut of Ruggles® Red Velvet Cake Limited Edition Premium Ice Cream, a delightfully rich flavor inspired by the traditionally Southern dessert. The limited edition Ruggles Ice Cream flavor is available now and will remain in grocers' freezers through the spring season while supplies last.
Ruggles Red Velvet Cake Limited Edition Premium Ice Cream features a red velvet cake background flavor with red velvet cake pieces and cream cheese frosting. The limited edition flavor is offered in 1.75-quart containers with a suggested retail price (SRP) of $5.29 to $5.99.
The flavor's origin is debatable. The most common urban myth centers around a patron's request for the recipe from the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. When the recipe arrived with a hefty bill, she reportedly mailed it out to hundreds of others in retaliation. Other rumors place it in the bakery of Canada's Eaton's department store in Winnipeg. The American Southern infatuation with the flavor didn't diminish even during World War II's food rations, when bakers used boiled red beets instead of food coloring to produce the signature color.
"We may not know how red velvet cake was really created, but we do know that our customers will love this new limited edition flavor," said Penny Baker, Director of Marketing for Ruggles. "It's creamy and rich, while cool and refreshing for a satisfying springtime treat."
For an easy make-ahead dessert, try "Ruggles Easy Freezy Red Velvet Torte." Soften one container each of Ruggles Golden Vanilla Premium Churned Frozen Yogurt and Ruggles Red Velvet Cake Limited Edition Premium Ice Cream. Line two 9-inch round or square cake pans with waxed paper. Press the golden vanilla yogurt into the bottom of each, to a depth of 3/8 inch. Briefly refreeze to harden, then top each with a 1-1/2-inch layer of red velvet cake ice cream. Refreeze. When ready to serve, invert on plate to create a layered dessert torte.
