WASHINGTON, May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In less than two years since its launch, the RT America YouTube channel has reached a milestone which puts it ahead of many older, established, mainstream TV channels: more than 100,000 subscribers.
The 100,000-subscriber count is remarkable because it is more than twice higher the number for Fox News (under 50,000 at the time of writing), and significantly ahead of CNN's near-70,000. RT America YouTube channel's total viewership numbers have passed 36 million views – surpassing the 23 million of Fox News, which has been on YouTube around four years longer than RT America, and nearly matching those of CNN's 37 million, which is older by five.
Overall, RT became the first TV news channel in the world to pass 700 million views on YouTube, surpassing the competition that includes Fox News, CNN International, Al Jazeera English, Reuters, Sky News and many others. According to YouTube year-end statistics published by Google, an RT YouTube channel video became the most watched news item in 2011, being watched over 20 million times. Following this massive increase in RT's popularity, the channel's profit from YouTube has exceeded a million dollars.
Since its inaugural broadcast in January 2010, RT America has grown into a full-fledged alternative for the viewers who have become disinterested in the mainstream coverage of global events. In just over two years, RT America has attracted an ever-growing audience of individuals who care about the world around them, who know that there is more than one side to a story and are looking for answers. The pace of the channel's growth over the last two years clearly demonstrates the information and analysis gaps in global news coverage, which RT is working hard to fill.
"RT America wants to thank our fans and loyal viewers: those who followed us from the start and those who are only just now tuning in. We look forward to many more years of bringing you the news that the mainstream is happy to dismiss. At RT, we question more, and we're glad that our viewers do too," - said head of the Internet Department at RT America Mindia Gavasheli.
RT America is part of RT, a global international news network that broadcasts in English, Arabic and Spanish from its studios in Moscow and Washington, DC, and is available to 530 million viewers, or 25% of all cable subscribers, worldwide. In 2010, RT became the first ever Russian channel to get a nomination for the prestigious Emmy International Award in the News category. RT streams online at RT.com.
