Roxanne Fernandes Named Chief Nursing Officer for Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota
Fernandes has more than three decades of experience with pediatric care, most recently as executive director of UCSF Children's Hospital
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- After an extensive national search, Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota has named Roxanne Fernandes as the organization's new Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
Fernandes comes to Children's after more than a decade at the University of California, San Francisco, Children's Hospital where she served as executive director. She has more than 30 years of experience in pediatrics, both at the bedside and in executive roles.
"Roxanne's experience and leadership style make her ideally suited for the Chief Nursing Officer position," said Alan L. Goldbloom, MD, president and CEO of Children's of Minnesota. "She has a reputation for being a hands-on leader, who understands the importance of being accessible and responsive to her team. She will be an excellent addition to Children's."
Fernandes is a native of Fargo, N.D., but has spent her entire professional career on the West Coast. Her first nursing job was at Children's Hospital Oakland in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where she eventually served as NICU manager. She then moved to East Bay hospitals, where she introduced ventilation and a surgical program at a community intensive care nursery, and directed a large high-risk perinatal service.
While obtaining a master's from the University of San Francisco in 2000, she became the executive director of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, responsible for operations, budget, quality, fundraising, and strategic business development and planning.
Fernandes said she is excited for the chance to move back to the Midwest, and to join a hospital that has a national reputation for quality care that is uniquely focused on the needs of children and families.
"Children's of Minnesota has established itself as a leader in providing the best care for patients in an environment that helps children heal," said Fernandes. "Nurses play a vital role in both of these areas, and I am excited to get to work with such a talented and dedicated team."
Fernandes has been named one of the top 100 Influential Women in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Business Times each of the last five years. She serves on the board of trustees for the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). Even with these national roles, Fernandes has always maintained a focus on ways to improve care at the bedside.
Fernandes lives with her husband of 31 years and their three dogs. She has two children and five grandchildren. She is scheduled to begin her role at Children's in late May 2011.
