ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Diabetes Association is pleased to announce that it will present the Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award to Roseanne O. Yeung, MD, MPH, FRCPC who is currently at the University of Alberta, Canada. This award, given in memory of Mr. P. Nagendran and funded by a grant from Suku Nagendran, MD and Anne Nagendran, promotes and recognizes diabetes research focused on South Asian or Asian American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations and/or research by a scientist from South Asia or the AANHPI population. The researcher can be located anywhere in the world and can belong to any ethnic group.
The award recognizes the contributions of Vivian Fonseca, MD, the Association's 2012 President, Medicine & Science, who in his years of volunteer service to the Association has been a mentor and role model to many researchers and clinicians. Dr. Yeung will be recognized with this honor at the Association's 75th Scientific Sessions®, taking place June 5-9, 2015, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.
Dr. Yeung is an endocrinologist and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, University of Alberta, Canada. She completed her clinical training at the University of British Columbia, and spent the last two years at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a Clinical Investigator Fellow examining the epidemiology of Asian diabetes, while also completing her Master's in Public Health at Harvard. Dr. Yeung and her Hong Kong colleagues have recently published the results examining metabolic profiles of young-onset type 2 diabetes across nine Asian countries in the JADE program, and she is a co-investigator in the Multi-centre Peer Support Program for type 2 diabetes in Hong Kong.
Now in Alberta, Dr. Yeung has joined the Alliance for Canadian Health Outcomes Research in Diabetes, and is collaborating with Dr. Padma Kaul, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, who is the principal investigator of a Canadian Institutes of Health Research funded project examining the downstream effects of gestational diabetes mellitus on both mothers and children. Dr. Yeung humbly accepts this award on behalf of the group, and would like to recognize the significant contributions of her co-authors, Drs. Ana Savu, Jeffrey A. Johnson and Lois E. Donovan.
The Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award will be presented to Dr. Yeung on Saturday, June 6 at 8:00 a.m. at the Oral Session, "Diabetes Clinical Diagnosis and Screening." After receiving the award, Dr. Yeung will present her abstract, "Ethnic Differences in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus—A Population-Level Analysis."
