Rosario Ferre publishes new novel, 'Lazos de sangre'
It is destined to become an indispensable work in Latin American literature
MIAMI, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Alfaguara is privileged to announce the release of the most recent novel by Puerto Rican author Rosario Ferre.
"Lazos de sangre" (Blood Ties) describes the life of Rose Monroig, from her childhood to the point at which she becomes a writer. Through rich detail, readers are able to intimately experience the life of a woman who always dreamed of writing and who manages to establish herself as a respected author. Through Rose, we vividly see the odds against that success and the discrimination against women during the last century in Puerto Rico.
In general, the book provides a broad look at the lives of women during this period, both through the main character Rose, as well as the other characters in the Monroig, Azrizmendi, and Portalatini families. Rosario Ferre weaves together prose and characterization to create a dense tapestry, taking readers on a journey through the silences and fissures of 20th Century societies in Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the U.S. Rosario Ferre has once again delivered a book that is destined to become an indispensable work in Latin American literature.
Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1938, Rosario Ferre graduated from Manhattanville College in 1960. She received a Master's degree in Spanish and Latin American literature from the University of Puerto Rico in 1985, and a Doctorate degree from the University of Maryland in 1987.
Ferre began writing in the 1970's, while she worked as an editor at the literary magazine, Zona: Carga y Descarga. Many young Puerto Rican writers gained notoriety through this magazine. In 1992, Ferre was awarded the Liberatur Prix during the Frankfort Book Fair, and in 1995, she was a finalist for the U.S. National Book Award for her novel, "The House on the Lagoon."
Rosario Ferre is recognized as one of the most important writers of Puerto Rico. Her works include, "The Youngest Doll," "The Battle of Virgins," "Sweet Diamond Dust," "Flight of the Swan," and "Eccentric Neighborhoods."
