NEW YORK, Oct. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Global law firm Ropes & Gray today announced that Joanna Bergmann has re-joined the firm's corporate health care practice group as counsel in the New York office. Ms. Bergmann has advised and guided organizations through the full range of legal matters affecting clinical trials, academic medical centers, and national for-profit health systems; and will further enhance the capabilities of the firm's health care practice, which was recognized as Chambers USA's "Health Team of the Year" in 2015.
Ms. Bergmann joins Ropes & Gray from the Office of the General Counsel, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Division, National Institutes of Health (NIH) branch where she served as a senior attorney and chief counsel to the National Cancer Institute, which operates under the NIH. She was a corporate associate at Ropes & Gray from 2005 – 2012.
"It is with great excitement that I re-join the team of creative lawyers at Ropes & Gray. The firm has an excellent reputation in the high-stakes health care regulatory and transactional space," said Ms. Bergmann, who has experience providing counsel on data confidentiality regulations, requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), clinical trial agreements and the legal issues surrounding the development and implementation of electronic health record (EHR) systems.
"Ms. Bergmann is an excellent lawyer who will offer clients comprehensive and practical insights developed from years of collaborating with state and federal agencies and departments," said Timothy McCrystal, co-chair of Ropes & Gray's corporate health care practice group.
"Ms. Bergmann's substantive experience will bolster our health care transactions, clinical research and privacy and data security bench," added Deborah Gersh, co-chair of the corporate health care practice group. "Notably, while an associate at Ropes & Gray, Ms. Bergmann had substantial involvement handling investigations into and assessment of the potential risks faced by private equity fund clients investing in the health care area."
Ms. Bergmann received her J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 2001; a Master's in bioethics from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; a Master's in public health from Boston University; and a Bachelor's in philosophy from Swarthmore College.
