Roller Conveyors 101: Learn the Lingo Courtesy of A Plus Warehouse
LYNN, Mass., July 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Roller conveyors are an essential for nearly any materials handling business, plant, or warehouse. But although many people need and use them, not many people know how to order them, says A Plus Warehouse, a leading business-to-business distributor of locker equipment and materials handling equipment. Always dedicated to providing optimal customer service, A Plus Warehouse has put together a blog post explaining the necessary terms for ordering roller conveyors.
"There is a terminology that we use on a daily basis that makes perfect sense to our sales people, but can seem like a foreign language to our customers at times. We always explain these terms while processing your order but we like to make the information available in advance as well," said Ed Stairman, president of A Plus Warehouse. "The two most important things you need to know when ordering conveyors are whether you want the rollers set high or low, and the roller center size."
The rollers on a conveyor are mounted either above or below the frame. Most conveyors ordered from A Plus Warehouse are set high, because otherwise if a load overhangs the rollers its path will be blocked by the frame. A roller conveyor with rollers set high will allow users to move items slightly wider than the nominal roller length, while a low-set roller conveyor's frame can be used as a guard rail to ensure loads remain on the conveyor.
The roller center of a conveyor is defined as the distance between rollers (center to center) on the conveyor. The minimum number of rollers required for a rigid package is three, and flexible packages require four rollers. To measure how large of a roller center is required, materials should be measured and then divided by three for rigid packages or four for flexible packages. The resulting measurement is the length of roller center you will need.
