Roger Williams University to Offer Master's in Historic Preservation Starting This Fall
Graduate degree will build on the legacy of the nation's oldest undergraduate program in historic preservation
BRISTOL, R.I., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In an effort to meet increasing regional demand for professionals to preserve historic buildings, communities and infrastructure, Roger Williams University will offer a master of science in historic preservation beginning this September.
Building on the reputation and rigor of the nation's oldest undergraduate program in historic preservation, the University's new graduate program will provide a multi-disciplinary approach to prepare students for careers in preservation, architecture, community planning and construction management, among other specialties.
"The program will build on decades of experience delivering rigorous, field-based preservation education," says Stephen White, dean of RWU's School of Architecture, Art and Historic Preservation. "Students and faculty will work closely with other graduate programs – including architecture, construction management, public administration and leadership – to ensure a comprehensive purview of the field and to engage many preservation practitioners as partners in the educational process."
Students will enhance their understanding of preservation through coursework in preservation history and philosophy, documentation and research, community planning, law and regulation, and design and economics. Practical application through field-based workshops and internships will empower students on their way toward professional careers.
The University will offer two paths for students seeking the master's degree. For those who have completed an undergraduate degree in historic preservation, a one-year, 32-credit program is available beginning this fall. Starting in fall 2011, a full-time, two-year, 52-credit program will also be available to qualified students holding a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field. Students have the opportunity to customize their program based on their undergraduate study and area of professional interest.
