ROBLOX's Innovative Developer Exchange Program Reaches Half a Million Dollars in Payouts for User-Created Games
More Than $500,000 Paid to Young Indie Game Developers within Program's First Year
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- ROBLOX, the Internet's largest user-powered game creation, development, and gameplay platform, today announced that the company's Developer Exchange (DevEx) program has awarded more than $500,000 in payouts to game developers in the past ten months. The program, which enables budding and indie game creators to exchange virtual currency – known as ROBUXTM – earned from their ROBLOX games for cash, has also raised its monthly payout limit to $20,000 each month per developer.
The limit increase follows on the heels of two young developers, Loleris and Berezaa, reaching the previous $12,500 per month payout limit in August. Laimonas Mileska (ROBLOX handle: Loleris), a 17-year-old coder from Lithuania, achieved the payout for his blockbuster mystery title, "The Mad Murderer" (with more nearly 16 million plays in just four months) as well as an enduring popular thriller, "Darkness 2". Loleris, who has an innate talent for game monetization, is also the head of his own independent ROBLOX development collective, using an entire team to consistently create and publish their own unique properties to the ROBLOX platform. Loleris is a budding software developer who eventually dreams of owning his own studio space, and is using the ROBLOX platform to hone his skills in the meantime.
"We've reached half a million dollars in developer payout less than a year after launching the program, which speaks volumes about the talented creators using ROBLOX to fuel their creativity," said David Baszucki, CEO of ROBLOX. "ROBLOX remains dedicated to providing the best possible experience for our developers and players. Continuing to build on the Developer Exchange program will allow us to feature an ever-growing catalog of fun and innovative games to eager audiences while rewarding game developers for their hard work."
Berezaa is the 15-year old creator of multiplayer shoot-'em-up "2 Player Gun Factory Tycoon", and the second developer to have capped out at the current DevEx payout limit. As an avid Call of Duty player, Berezaa has managed to successfully integrate the expertise he's gathered as a console gaming veteran into the development his own game. He's currently in high school, and is hoping to use his earnings from ROBLOX's DevEx program toward his pursuit of higher education and fulfill his desire to enter the field of computer engineering.
To date, the DevEx program has fulfilled over 424 requests to budding developers and game enthusiasts around the globe. Game creators from the United States, as well as Ireland, Sweden, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and other international regions use ROBLOX to create and publish some of the most popular games in today's online marketplace. Out of the 15 million plus games created on ROBLOX's platform, some of those mainstream titles include "Murder Mystery," "Paintball!" and "Skybound." Each title has earned millions of plays, and thousands of dollars for their creators – some of whom are as young as 14.
