Roanoke Home Service Business Shares Severe Weather Preparation Tips
Southern Trust Home Services offers advice to southern Virginia homeowners for minimizing damage to their homes during hurricane season
ROANOKE, Va., Sept. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Trust Home Services, a leading HVAC, plumbing and electrical company in Roanoke owned by Contractor Magazine's Contractor of the Year winner Ted Puzio, is sharing safety and preparation tips to southern Virginia homeowners during the tropical storm season.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all in Hurricane Florence's path, especially those having to leave their homes and belongings behind," Puzio said. "For all of those not close enough to be evacuated, we still caution that you remain ready for severe weather and take measures to protect your home from the damaging effects of this system."
Puzio and the Southern Trust Home Services team encourages homeowners to take the following steps:
- Test your sump pump now – In homes with a basement, there will likely be a sump pit and pump that activates when invasive flood waters enter the pit. Make sure the exterior drain pipe is clear, and pour a five-gallon bucket into the sump pit to make sure the pump activates properly. A battery backup system is highly recommended so that the pump can continue to operate during a power outage.
- Divert downspout flows away from the foundation – During heavy rainfalls, even clear gutters and downspouts may not be enough to keep water flowing away from the foundation. Use long pieces of simple, inexpensive corrugated piping to extend the downspouts far enough away to keep the water flowing out to a safe distance.
- Use backup generators safely – In the midst of severe weather, it is critical to keep safety first. If choosing to operate a backup generator to keep refrigerators, lights or other items online, do not run the unit in a garage or near windows or doors. Gas generators will emit carbon dioxide, and the gas should be allowed to vent safely away from the home.
- Protect electronics and appliances – If you have time to install surge protectors, especially whole-home units, do so. If not, unplug any unnecessary items during electrical storms and consider keeping small battery banks on hand to keep cellular devices and portable radios charged. Sometimes staying connected means staying safe.
"As the old saying goes, we prepare for the worst and hope for the best," Puzio said. "We wish nothing but safety and protection for our friends and neighbors on the east coast, and we humbly offer this advice in hopes that it can help some residents better protect their properties and their families during times of severe weather."
