Roanoke Cement Company Commended for Environmental Outreach and Safety

TROUTVILLE, Va., April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Roanoke Cement Company's Troutville, Virginia plant and its Castle Hayne, North Carolina terminal will be honored this month for excellence in two different areas: environmental outreach and terminal safety. The Troutville plant is the winner of the "Outreach" Award for the 2012 Cement Industry Energy and Environmental Awards. The awards are sponsored by the Portland Cement Association, an international organization that represents cement manufacturers and affiliates and promotes concrete, and Cement Americas magazine, the leading industry trade magazine. The recognition is presented to individual cement facilities that exemplify the spirit of continuous environmental improvement and support this commitment with action.

The Outreach category credits activities that enhance community, employee and government relations. Included among the many achievements and initiatives noted for the Troutville plant was a fifth consecutive Energy Star® award, the 2011 Virginia Statewide Mineral Mining Reclamation Award, the on-site mitigation plan and quarry expansion, participation in Habitat for Humanity, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and the Second Annual Fishing Day, held at the new fishing dock.

The second award will be given to the Castle Hayne, NC terminal for its exemplary safety record. Roanoke Cement Company's Castle Hayne terminal has not had a lost time accident in 15 years and was honored last fall by North Carolina Department of Labor Commissioner, Cherie Berry. She presented the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) "flag" to the terminal for ongoing, effective workplace safety and health management systems. Both awards will be presented at the Portland Cement Association's board meeting on April 16, 2012 in Chicago.

The honors come in the wake of positive television news accounts of environmental, safety and outreach performances at the Roanoke facility. WECT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Wilmington, NC, investigated the plant and its operations in Troutville, VA. After an initial tour of the facility, followed by several rounds of interviews with plant personnel, neighbors and community leaders, WECT-TV presented a three-part report (http://www.wect.com/story/16654865/exclusive-look-a-tour-inside-va-titan-plant) in February 2012.  The North and South Carolina viewers heard Virginians praise Titan America/Roanoke Cement, saying the company has an excellent environmental record and is highly regarded for its stewardship.
