Roadway Safety Coalition Applauds Inclusion of Rural Road Safety Amendment in Senate Transportation Bill

WASHINGTON, March 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Roadway Infrastructure Safety Coalition (RISC) strongly endorsed a rural road safety amendment filed by Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and included in the Senate transportation authorization. The Coalition also applauds the Senate for passage of the transportation bill. RISC is one of the country's only national coalitions dedicated to roadway safety infrastructure on rural roads.

"Rural roads have a traffic fatality rate three times higher than all other roads – that is simply unacceptable," Klobuchar said. "This important amendment will help communities share and learn best practices to help keep our rural families safe."

The Klobuchar/Sessions Amendment directs the Secretary of Transportation to survey state and local governments to compile best practices of rural roadway safety infrastructure projects. The Secretary will then create a manual for state and local governments to use as a resource when making improvements to reduce rural road fatalities and serious injuries.

Because motorists are 2 1/2 times more likely to die on a rural road than on an urban one, a dedicated focus on rural road safety is critical. Investments and safety infrastructure improvements on rural roads are key to making America's entire roadway system both safe and efficient.
