RMT Sediment Remediation Project Recognized
Innovative capping technology receives engineering awards
MADISON, Wis., Feb. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- RMT, Inc. (RMT) was recently awarded a Best of State Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Wisconsin Chapter and a National ACEC Recognition Award. These awards recognize RMT's use of an innovative cap to clean up contaminated sediment in the Penobscot River in Bangor, Maine.
Development of remediation technologies for sediments that release non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) is in its infancy. RMT's NAPL Trapping Cap (patent pending) is designed to permanently and predictably control tar migration from sediment by redirecting tar that is released to a controlled accumulation area, where the non-aqueous phase tar is trapped while the gas is vented to the atmosphere.
RMT designed and built a full-scale application of the NAPL Trapping Cap—the first of its kind—in Bangor, Maine, a site that posed extreme engineering challenges. Construction on the project was completed in August 2010, for a fraction of the cost of more traditional and less effective alternatives.
"The NAPL Trapping Cap eliminates exposure of human and ecological receptors to tar and, subsequently, vastly reduces health risks," explains Gene McLinn, RMT Senior Client Executive for MGP Programs. "It also reduces costs by creating a targeted remediation area and will provide permanent migration control."
"The issue of tar is long-standing, so getting this done is a major step forward," said former City Manager Edward Barrett. "As we continue remaking our waterfront and attracting private development, it certainly benefits us to have this done."
There are between 3,000 and 30,000 similar sites in the U.S. Although each presents different technical, regulatory, and political challenges, the general principles of RMT's sediment remedy still apply. Given the Bangor project's success, RMT's NAPL Trapping Cap offers a viable alternative to traditional, but uncertain, methods for capping thousands of sediment-contaminated sites around the country.
