An estimated 8.3 million seniors face the threat of hunger every day in America. Worries about where their next meal is coming from and whether or not they can afford it are far too commonplace. Frank Sesno, director of The George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs and Face the Facts USA Co-founder, moderates a discussion featuring respected national experts on hunger and nutrition, who tackle this tough issue and redirect viewers inside the problem. How many Americans are impacted? Who are they? Where do they reside? Why did they end up in this condition? And, why are people suffering this sort of indignity in the land of plenty?
Ending Senior Hunger is sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America and explores the solutions that are being employed and implemented to solve this vexing issue. Who is helping? What more needs to be done? How much can non-profits really do? Is there a role for corporations? And, what role should the government play?
Panelists for the discussion include:
- University of Maryland Associate Professor of Nutrition Epidemiology and Graduate Director for Food Science and Nutrition, Dr. Nadine R Sahyoun;
- President and CEO of Austin, TX's Meals On Wheels & More, Dan Pruett;
- George Mason University Chair of the Department of Nutrition Studies, Dr. Lisa Palowski;
- National Foundation to End Senior Hunger President, Enid Borden; and
- President, Food & Research Action Center (FRAC) Jim Weill.
"There is no question that senior hunger is a hidden epidemic in our country," said Larry J. Tomayko, Interim CEO of the Meals On Wheels Association of America. "We are grateful to RLTV for helping us shine a spotlight on this issue which impacts not just the health of our seniors, but our nation's healthcare system and economy."
"We created Face the Facts USA to draw attention to important straight-forward facts that most Americans may not know, including often-ignored issues like hunger," said Sesno. "That millions of seniors go to sleep hungry in this country is startling and unacceptable to anyone. If it's unacceptable, then why is it happening, and what is being done about it? That's exactly what we intend to explore."
"We are particularly reminded during this Thanksgiving and holiday season that for many Americans, this is not a time of plenty," said RLTV President and CEO Paul FitzPatrick, "It is, in fact, the spirit of this season that calls us to reexamine the serious and heartbreaking issue of senior hunger and work towards a resolution with an important first step -- raising awareness. We also hope that this Fix America special will encourage our viewers and customers to lend a hand and do what they can to help out in their local communities."
Fix America: Ending Senior Hunger – A Face the Facts USA Special will re-air Nov. 15 at midnight; Monday, Nov. 19 at 5 PM; Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 10 PM; Thanksgiving Day, Thursday Nov. 22 at 10 AM and 4 PM; Sunday, Nov. 25 at 11 PM (all times ET) and will be repeated throughout December. The executive producers are John Gilmore and Alissa Collins Latenser.
