NEW YORK, Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Risperdal lawsuits (http://www.risperdallawsuitcenter.com/) involving allegations that the antipsychotic drug caused patients to experience gynecomastia (male breast growth) and other serious side effects continue to mount in courts around the country, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. On January 16, 2014, a 22-year-old man who took the medication for roughly four years filed a lawsuit in U.S District Court, Southern District of California, after he allegedly developed Risperdal gynecomastia. The lawsuit also claims that his use of Risperdal resulted in other side effects, including weight gain, diabetes and damage to his sexual and endocrine functions. (Case No. 3:14-cv-00106-JM-JMA)

"We have received inquiries from a number of individuals who allegedly suffered Risperdal gynecomastia and other injuries similar to those described by this plaintiff. We expect that the number of Risperdal lawsuit filings will continue to mount in the coming months," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free legal consultations to men and boys who allegedly developed gynecomastia due to their use of Risperdal.
Risperdal Lawsuits
Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic that is approved in the U.S. to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and adolescents ages 10-17. The drug, which was not cleared for any pediatric indications until 2006, is also approved to treat irritability in children (5-to-16 years of age) with autistic disorder. Some research also indicates that the medication is increasingly being used to treat behavior problems in children with ADHD, even though Risperdal has not been approved for that purpose.
According to court documents, more than 200 Risperdal lawsuits are currently pending in a consolidated litigation underway in the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia. Dozens of these claims were filed on behalf of alleged victims of Risperdal gynecomastia. Among other things, the lawsuits accuse Johnson & Johnson and its Janssen Pharmaceuticals unit of concealing the serious risks associated with Risperdal, and of improperly marketing the medication for use in children. (Risperdal Litigation, case number 100300296)
In November 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it had reached a settlement with Johnson & Johnson and Janssen to resolve civil and criminal charges regarding the marketing of Risperdal and other drugs. Like plaintiffs in Risperdal lawsuits, the government had also charged that the companies improperly promoted off-label use of the medication and concealed its serious side effects. The $2.2 billion accord ranked as the largest health care fraud settlement in the nation's history, the Justice Department said.
Alleged victims of Risperdal gynecomastia may be entitled to file their own claim against Johnson & Johnson and Janssen in order to obtain compensation for their injury-related damages.
