WOODCLIFF LAKE, N. J., May 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Led by Dr. Madhuri Singal, RRT, Manager of Respiratory Science, staff from the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, Inc. (RIFM) recently corresponded with the peer-reviewed scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives. The purpose of the correspondence was to correct some scientific misconceptions published in an article that appeared in the journal earlier in the year (Potera C., Scented products emit a bouquet of VOCs. Environ Health Perspect 119:A16 2011). VOCs are volatile organic compounds that may sometimes be emitted from fragranced products. Ms. Potera drew her conclusions based on research performed by Professor Anne Steinemann, Visiting Professor at Stanford University, Calif. Professor Steinemann is the author of some recent studies, quantifying fragrance ingredients in consumer products, which have been mischaracterized in the media lately.

"In the article "Scented Products Emit a Bouquet of VOCs," Potera (2011) gave a broad overview of the work of Steinemann et al. (2010) regarding the quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from fragranced products. Unfortunately, crucial facts were omitted about the materials cited and the use of alternative substances." (excerpt from RIFM's correspondence, published Environ Health Perspect, vol 119, no 5: A 200, May 2011)

RIFM is the international scientific authority for the safe use of fragrance materials. RIFM generates, evaluates and distributes scientific data on the safety assessment of fragrance raw materials found in personal and household care products. Through extensive research, testing and constant monitoring of all scientific literature available, RIFM maintains its Database as the most comprehensive source worldwide of physical-chemical, toxicological and eco-toxicological data associated with known fragrance and flavor materials. All of RIFM's scientific findings are evaluated by an independent Expert Panel -- an international group of dermatologists, pathologists, toxicologists, respiratory, reproductive and environmental scientists. The Expert Panel evaluates the safety of fragrance ingredients under conditions of intended use and publishes its results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The decisions of the Expert Panel regarding restrictions of use are also published as IFRA Standards, publicly available from the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) web site at www.ifraorg.org.
