Riding School Dress Code Trend, French Toast Sees Solid Back-to-School Sales
Leading Supplier of School Uniforms Forecasts 3-5 Percent Increase for Industry
NEW YORK, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The growing number of public schools adopting school dress codes is driving sales of school uniforms early in the back-to-school shopping period, according to French Toast (www.frenchtoast.com), a leading supplier of school uniforms for school-age boys and girls.
Although retailers are generally cautious about sales for the back-to-school period, French Toast expects overall school uniform sales to be up 3-5 percent for the industry. Geographically, the southeast and northeast are showing the largest gains in students attending schools with uniform programs, French Toast said.
"We continue to be encouraged by the 7 percent increase in number of schools that are either adopting or seriously considering a dress code for fall 2010," said Michael Arking president of FrenchToast.com, which closely tracks the number of schools considering dress codes.
Arking noted that the benefits of a school dress code – from reducing "label competition" to improvements in discipline – are attractive to school administrators and parents, many of whom also appreciate the lower costs of school uniforms. A full French Toast school uniform wardrobe costs approximately $120 for an entire year, far less than a pair of designer jeans and about 30 percent less than competing brands.
As students become more accustomed to wearing school uniforms, they are increasingly dressing them up and giving them some personal style through the use of accessories like belts, socks, bracelets and items for the hair, said Arking. Other trends that he sees for the back-to-school season include skinny pants for girls, more tapered blouses and fashion blouses. In terms of colors, purple and gold are becoming more popular choices for school dress codes, he noted.
