"Eikoh Hosoe: The Human Rodin Exhibition" primarily comprises photographs of Auguste Rodin sculptures taken at the Musee Rodin in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. It is the first exhibition in the world of images from this series of photographs by Eikoh Hosoe, one of Japan's most renowned photographers.
[Profile of Eikoh Hosoe]
Eikoh Hosoe is director of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts and professor emeritus of Tokyo Polytechnic University. He was born in the Yamagata Prefecture city of Yonezawa in 1933. Hosoe was awarded a Purple Ribbon Medal by the Japanese government in 1998 for his contribution to academic and artistic developments, improvements and accomplishments. In 2003, he was one of the seven photographers honored with a Special Anniversary Medal in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Royal Photographic Society. Another award followed in 2006, when he became the first Japanese photographer to win the Visionary Award of the Lucie Awards (U.S.), which honors worldwide achievements in photography. In November 2009, he was named the year's master photographer at the Lucca Digital Photo Fest in Italy. At the festival exhibition held in a 15th-century villa, Hosoe's silk hanging scrolls -- containing images from "Man and Woman," "Ordeal by Roses," "Kamaitachi," "The Cosmos of Gaudi, Ukiyo-e Projections," etc. -- were exhibited on the walls of five fresco-decorated rooms. In May 2010, Hosoe was awarded the Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement in Photography by the National Arts Club in New York. He was the first Japanese photographer to receive this honor and the fourth non-American.
