Rice University Maximizes Ektron Platform with Large-Scale Deployment of Over 200 Sites
Rice Launching Average Three Ektron Projects a Week. Ektron Empowering Over 1300 Web and Content Administrators.
NASHUA, N.H., July 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Massive web content needs require large-scale deployments. Rice University, one of the nation's best teaching and research universities, is a premiere example of that adage.
"We're launching Ektron-related projects at enterprise-scale, an average of three a week," says Jeff Frey, Assistant Director of Technology Solutions at Houston-based Rice University. "Our use of Ektron for over 200 external production sites, and over 200 internal sites, gives us predictable project management; speeds up training; allows easier code sharing and review; and provides a consistent and flexible user experience."
Frey cites the Rice Civil and Environmental Engineering (C&E) department as one example. The C&E site shares content among 21 other sub-sites of the George R. Brown School of Engineering, reusing the same content, modified as needed for the sub-sites' information distribution needs.
"An example of a completely different use of Ektron is the Houston Friends of Chamber Music website," says Frey. "They needed an informational and e-commerce website, one that would appeal to an audience interested in cultural events and would make it easy to get concert information, buy tickets and donate on-line."
Other sites running on the Ektron platform are the Jones Graduate School of Business; Rice's Centennial Campaign; and several non-Rice-branded sites such as the Laboratory for Nano Photonics and the Chao Center for Asian Studies.
With Mobile playing an increasing role in the relationship between school and student, Rice is also leading with Ektron to address their Mobile audience. "Students are mobile," says Frey. "And all our students expect Rice content to be everywhere, whether for courses, homework, to reserve rooms, or to pay fees."
The Rice University Recreation Center site is also powered by Ektron, and makes full use of the automation, content sharing, mobile, and e-commerce capabilities of the Ektron platform. "It's one of the more forward-thinking departments on campus and tries to make full use of the capabilities in the software," says Frey.
