Motivational interviewing is a specific form of psychotherapy that facilitates the client's intrinsic motivation to change behavior. As a therapeutic technique, it provides a goal-oriented, client-centered counseling style that elicits behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve the ambivalence that impedes decision-making. Clients with drug and alcohol problems, or highly defensive clients, are among those who benefit from this techniques. The presentation will identify the cognitive skills pre-requisites for successful use of motivational interviewing.
