Retail revenue from smartphones up 73% year-over-year
PITTSBURGH, May 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Revenue from shoppers on smartphones increased 73 percent over the last year, according to a new report from Branding Brand's Mobile Commerce Index (MCI). In April 2015, smartphone revenue accounted for 13 percent of total online revenue – a 63 percent year-over-year increase.
The Index, which identifies retail trends for a sample of 50 U.S. mobile websites running on Branding Brand's platform, shows smartphone conversion increased 31 percent since April 2014, while desktop conversion decreased two percent. Additionally, smartphone visits increased 29 percent year-over-year; desktop visits decreased eight percent.
"This is the second month in a row where desktop conversion has declined," said Branding Brand co-founder and CEO Chris Mason. "Because retailers have more ways to interact with consumers than ever before, they must continue optimizing their experiences to keep up with shopping's increasing complexity."
The report also revealed that smartphone shoppers have started preparing for warmer weather. Compared to Q1 2015, shorts purchases increased 148 percent, and sleeveless shirt purchases increased 83 percent as a percentage of all items ordered.
The 50 mobile sites in the April 2015 MCI produced a total of 72 million visits and $86 million in revenue.
