Residents with Memory Impairment Cruise to the Past at Encinitas Car Show
ENCINITAS, Calif., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Poodle skirts, sock hop music and colorful cars with tail fins and wooden side panels will fill the parking lot of the Silverado Senior Living – Encinitas community for its third annual Cruisin' Classic Car Show 11:00am - 2:00pm, June 18. For the residents with memory impairment and their families, it will be a special opportunity for them to connect and enjoy this Father's Day weekend.
The loss of traditional communication is a trademark of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Often family members find it difficult to connect with their loved ones in same ways they used to. Caregivers frequently state that confusion is one of the most difficult things to manage. Our own inability to process information being offered verbally or non-verbally by those in our care can lead to serious frustration. A person with dementia may be living in a different reality from that of the caregivers. One way to connect and to learn how to communicate with someone suffering from a memory impairing disease is to step boldly into his or her reality.
Sponsored by Lil' Guys Car Club, many caregivers and family members from last year were thrilled that residents shared stories of when they were young, went out on dates, and had fun. This gave families a chance to learn something new about their loved ones' lives and reconnect in a new and beautiful way. Silverado believes that by providing social engagement opportunities, like this annual car show, they are giving both their residents and families the chance to interact and communicate.
