FAIRHOPE, Ala., Oct. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the October 2018 issue of Menopause published research supporting the use of the O- Shot® (Orgasm Shot®) procedure as a method for relieving dyspareunia (pain with sex) that often plagues women after being treated for breast cancer.
Because women often avoid estrogen replacement after breast cancer, the resulting changes in the vagina-without-estrogen can result in pain, tearing, & bleeding with sexual intercourse.
"The devastating result of combining breast resection, with loss of estrogen, followed by pain with sexual relations can rip apart relationships and greatly damage the pleasure and psychological satisfaction that women can find in sexual intimacy and sexual energy even when living alone," says Dr. Runels. "Sexual wholeness is important to women, even when they choose to live alone. We've already published studies documenting the improvement in vulval-vaginal tissue when treating the pain associated with lichen sclerosus, but this study showing help using the O-Shot® procedure for women suffering with pain after breast cancer, was greatly needed."
The O-Shot® procedure (invented by Dr. Runels) uses a woman's own blood-derived growth factors or platelet rich plasma (PRP) to heal tissue. Dr. Runels first invented the Vampire Facelift® procedure as a way to study the effects of PRP on the face before he started using the same methods to heal the tissue of the vagina and surrounding structures (the procedure can help with urinary incontinence as well).
Dr. Runels quickly pointed out that even though more than 10,000 research studies have demonstrated great depths of understanding of the effects of PRP to heal tissue, more specific studies for urogynecological indications are needed to help determine who may benefit most, who may not benefit at all, and best methods.
"No procedure works perfectly all the time," he was quick to point out.
No serious infection, granuloma, or neoplasia has been documented with platelet rich plasma, but the full efficacy and best methods of the treatment of dyspareunia demand further studies.
"With millions of injections of PRP per year, the therapy has a strong track record. Most O-Shot® providers offer a money-back guarantee to avoid criticism. Since I started taking cash for this procedure, I have never once kept the money of anyone who was not completely satisfied with the results. And all of us treat some people for free (which is not allowed under insurance where you're required to charge a co-pay)," said Dr. Runels.
"Hopefully, one day the procedure will be covered by insurance, but for now, this is a cash procedure to cover the time of the physician and the use of the expensive devices approved by the FDA for the preparation of PRP for injection back into the body," said Dr. Runels.
Dr. Runels says the Cellular Medicine Association, which he founded, has spent hundreds of thousands per year on research for the past 8 years, but for good multi-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, millions are needed; and since there is no drug involved, it's very difficult to get funding for the studies (which provide free treatment and free lab testing for participants). Dr. Runels started a non-profit to help fund the studies (100% of donations go toward research), the Institute for Lichen Sclerosus and Vulval Health LSVH.org
