Research Appropriator Applauds New Funds to Attack Alzheimer's Disease
WASHINGTON, Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the leading Democratic appropriator for scientific research as Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and a leader on neuroscience, issues this statement on the Obama Administration's plan to increase Alzheimer's disease research spending:
"Injuries and diseases of the brain are crippling millions of Americans every year, but research into the range of neurological disorders has been underfunded and uncoordinated. The Obama Administration has acted on this challenge today with additional resources for promising, ongoing research into Alzheimer's disease, and it will be asking Congress to raise that stake even higher in the next budget.
"As author of the initiative – signed into law by President Obama two months ago – to declare neuroscience research a top U.S. priority to be coordinated at the White House, I applaud these two steps to prime the pump on Alzheimer's research. I will be championing the effort in the Appropriations Committee and in the House to provide Alzheimer's researchers with the resources they need to face this critical challenge in a smart and coordinated way."
