Republic of Honduras Thanks U.S. Government for Congratulating President Juan Orlando Hernández on His Electoral Victory

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Dec. 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Republic of Honduras commended the U.S. government for congratulating Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández on his electoral victory. President Hernández will begin his second term when he is re-inaugurated on January 27, 2018.
In a statement, U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said, "We congratulate President Juan Orlando Hernández on his victory in the November 26 presidential elections, as declared by the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal."
According to the final election results published by the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal on December 17, President Hernández garnered 42.95% of the vote. Salvador Nasralla finished second, receiving 41.42% of the vote.
In its statement, the State Department "reiterate[d] the call for all Hondurans to refrain from violence" and "urge[d] Honduran citizens or political parties challenging the result to use the avenues provided by Honduran law."
The governments of Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Ecuador, Guatemala, Israel, and South Korea have all congratulated President Hernández on his victory.
