At the OMG Technical Meeting in Washington, D.C. in March, George Arnold, National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability, NIST, spoke to meeting attendees about the importance of standards for energy, specifically smart grid. Standards have played a key role in the explosive growth of the internet and computer technology over the past two decades. The nation's energy grid, by comparison, is behind the times. George encouraged the group to apply its expertise in developing interoperability standards that aided the internet revolution to creating a standards framework to enable a smart grid-enabled electricity system.
The Smart Energy Working Group will provide focus for OMG member organizations that participate in energy related activities. Interoperability and innovative support of emerging business practices will motivate the working group's focus and bring end-to-end clarity to the standardization of targeted practices. At the Smart Energy WG meeting in June, the group will work on developing a standards roadmap and continue to work on a gap analysis to identify which areas would most benefit from standards (either existing or needed).
"Some of the areas we'll be looking at in terms of standards include Business Process Modeling and Enterprise Architecture, which are significantly impacted during the smart grid transformation process," said Irv Badr, Senior GoToMarket Manager, IBM, co-chair, OMG's Smart Energy Working Group.
"We are actively engaged in global Smart Grid activities as we see the opportunity to leverage the new energy infrastructure for significant growth," said John Teeter, Chief Scientist, PeoplePower, co-chair, OMG's Smart Energy Working Group.
The Smart Energy WG encourages organizations that have interests in marketing energy solutions to participate, bringing their knowledge of use-cases and requirements. Members that have internal sustainability initiatives within their organizations and those implementing internal energy management solutions are also welcomed. Organizations that participated in the formative meeting of the Smart Energy WG include IBM, PeoplePower, PrismTech, Washington State University, EPRI, Grid Data, Real-Time Innovations and Open Commons.
